If you live near Abalone Cove or along the Palos Verdes bluffs, your chimney is taking a beating you probably can't see from ground level. Marine salt deposits accelerate mortar joint erosion to the point where we routinely find 1970s-era chimneys with mortar recessed a full inch or more behind the brick face.
